BUBT Hosts Country's First-Ever Higher Secondary & Economics Olympiads

In a pioneering move to foster economic awareness and analytical thinking among higher secondary students, the Department of Economics of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) organized the country's first-ever 'Economics Olympiad' for HSC-level students. The landmark educational competition was successfully held today at the BUBT campus.
Around 150 meritorious students from 25 leading colleges across the country, including Dhaka College, Dhaka City College, Motijheel Ideal School and College, BAF Shaheen College, and Mohammadpur Preparatory College spontaneously participated in this national event. To promote interdisciplinary thinking, BUBT encouraged students from all three streams: Science, Business Studies, and Humanities to compete, drawing a huge response from both students and their respective teachers.
Dr. Mustafa K. Mujeri, Executive Director of the Institute for Inclusive Finance and Development (InM), graced the inaugural session as the chief guest. In his opening remarks, he stated, & Economics is a transformative tool for addressing real-life challenges," and urged the youth to pursue intellectual excellence to build a sustainable and inclusive future.
Speaking at the event, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of BUBT, Professor Dr. A B M Shawkat Ali, reaffirmed the university & strong commitment to bridging the gap between higher secondary education and advanced academic research. Professor Dr. Syed Masud Husain, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, along with senior university officials, was also present.
In the afternoon session, Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf from the Department of Humanities (Economics) at BUET attended as the chief guest and delivered a career-focused presentation. In the same session, Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali presented an analytical paper on the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, providing students with practical insights into contemporary macroeconomic policies.
The day-long event concluded with a vibrant prize-giving ceremony celebrating the immense potential of Bangladeshi youth. The champions (1st place) in each of the three categories received a cash prize of BDT 10,000, while the second and third-place winners received BDT 7,000 and BDT 5,000 respectively, along with crests and certificates. Jahangirnagar University School & College clinched the top spot in the Science category, Savar Govt. College won in Business Studies, and Dania College stood first in the Humanities category. Furthermore, BUBT awarded participation certificates to all contenders to inspire their academic journey.
In his closing remarks, Professor Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of the Department of Economics at BUBT, expressed his sincere gratitude to all participating students, teachers, and guests for making this first-of-its-kind national initiative a resounding success.
